Bovine brucellosis: Seroepidemiology and herder’s knowledge, attitude and practices in Bench Maji zone, southern Ethiopia

Brucellosis is a major public and animal health problem in many parts of the world, particularly pastoral settings where livestock livelihood food sources. Effective prevention control brucellosis depends on knowledge, attitude practices community. This cross-sectional study was conducted between November 2018 April 2019 Bench Maji zone, with objectives investigating prevalence associated risk factors bovine brucellosis, assessing knowledge herders. A questionnaire survey (n=300) collection blood samples (n=772) were carried out. The sera screened using Rose Bengal Plate Test (RBPT) positive ones further confirmed by Complement Fixation (CFT). Results showed that 25 (3.24%) 15 (1.94%) 772 animals for RBPT CFT. shows an overall sero-prevalence 1.94%, (95% CI: 0.97- 0.2.92%) area. highest prevalence, 2.74%, recorded at Menitshasha district while no case Menitgoldiya districts. Large herd size (OR=4.7) migration (OR=3.52) association seropositivity. Cows abortion history had higher likelihood seropositive than other groups. Majority pastoralists (72.7%) did not have information basic about whereas 27.3% them heard it very small proportion (3.3%) knew its zoonotic importance.
